Turning an Inexpensive Shower Curtain into a Work of Art
Sometimes it seems that you can't find
the right shower curtain
you are looking for. Whether it's for your own bathroom or as a
gift to a friend, it's necessary for it to match the general
feel of the bathroom and the person using it.
With a little creativity, you can come up with your very own
custom shower curtain. An inexpensive shower curtain can be
personalized and turned into a priceless work of art.
Materials needed for the project
It is not really difficult to find a clear vinyl shower curtain
at your bath and bathroom accessories stores. You may also use a
transparent liner for this project, the one used with
non-waterproof fabric curtains. Painting materials include paint
pens, acrylic paints and brushes. These are purchasable in
bookstores and art and crafts supplies stores. You will also
need an image of your choice that you will paint onto the
curtain; it can be anything such as an art poster, enlarged
photograph of a beautiful landscape, or even of yourself or your
loved ones. A roll of masking tape is also needed for this
project.
Getting started with your customized shower curtain
Before you get on with the project, it is best if you first
clean the vinyl material with water and some detergent. This is
necessary to remove any powdery film on the surface that will
prevent the paint from sticking and drying on it effectively.
Dry it thoroughly with a clean rag afterwards.
For this example, a huge world map will be used to craft a world
map shower curtain. Simply follow the step-by-step procedure
below:
1. On a huge surface, place the shower curtain face down. Place
the world map at the center face down on top of it. Tape the
corners of the world map; just make sure that the vinyl surface
beneath it is pulled taut as you do so. This is to ensure that
you have a nice smooth surface to paint on later. 2. After the
world map picture is secured well, turn the curtain right side
up. Now you can see the image that you are going to copy onto
the vinyl surface. Using the masking tape, apply a border around
the world map so that the paint will not go beyond the edges. 3.
With a paint pen, start to trace the outlines of the world map.
If the image you have is too detailed, you might just want to
trace the areas where the land and water parts meet, and not
anymore the borders of adjacent countries. 4. Fill in the
outlines with acrylic paint using your paint brush. The choice
of colors, of course, depends on your taste or personality. You
might also need to paint a second coating to get maximum paint
coverage. 5. If you want, you can further embellish your curtain
by placing sequins on the countries you have or wanting to
visit. Fasten them by using hot glue. You may also use letter
stencils to add the names of the countries. 6. Let the artwork
dry completely for at least an hour before you remove the world
map beneath. How about crafting a replica of your favorite
painting, a much-loved cartoon character or a subway map shower
curtain? Your custom shower curtain is limited only by your
imagination.
